Joshua Gray
USA Team Leader & Coach — USA Deaf Basketball International
{U.featured}My name is Joshua Gray and I am the Team Leader and Coach of the USA men's and women's 3x3 basketball national team. I am a longtime member of USA Deaf Basketball International and currently serve as Vice Commissioner of USA Club Basketball. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside exceptional leaders in the Deaf sports community, and Gabriele Serpi stands out as one of the most remarkable figures I have ever encountered.
I first met Gabriele when he was serving as ICSD Media Director at the Winter Deaflympics in Erzurum, Turkey, and I was immediately struck by his dedication, leadership, and innovative approach to overcoming challenges. Gabriele consistently demonstrated his ability to lead the team with confidence, manage complex logistics, and mentor his staff effectively. His forward-thinking mindset and commitment to excellence led to significant improvements in media accessibility and representation of the Deaf community.
His exceptional work inspired me to follow the European Basketball Championship in Málaga, Spain, and the Bowling Championship in Belgium — both made a success largely due to his efforts. His work continued to achieve results at the 3x3 Basketball World Cup in Washington D.C. in December 2024 at Gallaudet University.
Gabriele's passion for ensuring that Deaf people around the world can access and enjoy sports events is truly inspiring. His attention to accessibility, inclusion, and quality in media coverage has elevated the standards of how Deaf sport is represented on a global scale.
Gabriele's openness to innovation and constant pursuit of improvement ensure that his work in the media world remains top-tier. His ability to balance technical excellence with a deep understanding of community needs sets him apart as a visionary leader.
It is without hesitation that I praise Gabriele Serpi for his contributions to Deaf sport and accessibility. His work not only enriches the sports experience for athletes and fans, but also exemplifies the best of what leadership and innovation can achieve in our community.

I collaborated with Gabriele Serpi on a couple of productions in the role of replay operator (RVM). The start required a natural period of organisational adjustment, especially in managing the communication flows typical of a live production. With mutual availability and collaboration, however, we quickly found an effective working method.
Gabriele proved to be precise, attentive and focused in managing replays, working with responsibility and a good ability to read the dynamics of the race. In a delicate role like that of the RVM, where timing and clarity make the difference, he was able to maintain order and reliability.
Beyond technical competence, I appreciated his professional sensitivity: discreet, respectful of teamwork and determined to grow and improve. Qualities that in a live production truly make the difference.

Throughout the DCL week, working alongside Serpi and the media team was fantastic. There was true cohesion, good communication, and every problem encountered was resolved together, naturally. An authentic bond formed, with mutual respect and immediate trust.
I must say I was impressed by his skills and technological knowledge. He has perfect mastery of his equipment and, even when using gear that is not his own — a drone, a video camera, a camera, etc. — he knows how to connect everything and make it work in a flash. He adapts to unexpected technical challenges without stress. Thanks to him, everything ran smoothly, even in the most tense moments: unstable weather conditions, bugs, technical problems. He always remained calm and found a solution.
He does not wait to be told what to do: he suggests, anticipates and thinks of things we had not ourselves thought of. He is a true professional, expert, with a high quality standard. He is a driving force within the team. He taught us to do better, to aim higher. We came out of this experience with more skills, more vision, more desire. He left an indelible mark on us and we will not forget him.
What I also appreciated greatly about Serpi was his personality: a cheerful, kind person, a good listener, who communicates with kindness and encourages others. He does not keep his knowledge to himself; on the contrary, he shares, trains and passes it on. Even on the day of the final, he took the time to train two people to ensure a quality live performance.
To tell the truth, at the beginning I had a slight prejudice: I thought it would be complicated to work with him. And I was truly glad to be wrong. He is the exact opposite of what I imagined: human, attentive and truly efficient. The DCL Reims team is truly proud and grateful to have worked with Serpi. And if we had to do it all over again? It would be a resounding yes, without hesitation.

I had the opportunity to work with Serpi for two weeks in Málaga, during the European Basketball Championship, and it was an incredible experience. He is an excellent professional, always ready to collaborate and with a positive attitude that facilitates teamwork. I felt very comfortable working with him from the very first moment and would not hesitate to take any opportunity to collaborate again. A true pleasure!
